Snap(shot) Judgements are posts that will appear with no real regularity. It’s primarily a way for us to get thoughts and photos up as soon as possible, especially when we have no plan to write a feature-length column on the subject. Here, Gary gets his slow cooked pork on at Crocktoberfest.
Back in October, I attended Crocktoberfest after being tipped off to its existence by Yvo over at The Feisty Foodie. What is Crocktoberfest, you may wonder? Why, it’s an event put on by The National Pork Board to “rediscover the rewards of cooking low and slow.” So, basically, lots of pork being cooked up in crock pots – yeah, that’s something I’d be down for. At this event, five finalists in a contest to come up with the best original pork slow cooker recipe had their recipes prepared to be served to event attendees. In addition, host Candace Cameron Bure, she of “Full House” fame, also had her own recipe for carnitas tacos for sampling. While all the recipes were fine for the most part, I think a lot of us took issue with the pork being slow cooked separately from any of the flavor agents called for in the recipe which resulted in essentially the same pork being dressed in different sauces with the exception of the sausage. I’d like to try them out at some point the way they were intended to be prepared which I can do at any time since we all got copies of the recipe.
