Flour & Sun Bakery

Snap(shot) Judgements are posts that will appear with no real regularity. It’s primarily a way for us to get thoughts and photos up as soon as possible, especially when we have no plan to write a feature-length column on the subject. Here, Gary makes a morning stop for cupcakes in Pleasantville, NY.

This past Saturday morning I was up in Pleasantville, NY for a beer release. By morning, I mean I was up at 6:30 am, out the door by 7, on a train by 7:45 and in Westchester by 8:30. Why was I up there so early, you may wonder? Well, it was for a beer release at noon and I didn’t want to be left out of the limited offerings (you can start shaking your head in sadness now, folks). If you do the math correctly, that meant I had over three hours to kill before noon. After a breakfast in a nearby diner, some friends and I walked around and came upon Flour & Sun Bakery, the self-proclaimed “first and only cupcake bakery” in Westchester. That may be somewhat misleading (not the first part) since I do believe they bake regular-sized cakes but they are indeed primarily a cupcake shop. A decent one at that but at $2.75 and $3 for their cupcakes, I wouldn’t say it’s worth what you’re paying. But, hey, when you’re the only game in town, good is good enough.

Flour & Sun Bakery

A tiny little shop with some cupcakes in display cases up front but very sparsely decorated.

Cupcakes

We got three cupcakes. Clockwise, from top left, are the Red Velvet, Creamsicle, and Loop-d-Loop.

Loop-d-Loop

The Loop-d-Loop is a chocolate cupcake with a cream filling and chocolate ganache frosting. Yes, it looks like a Hostess cupcake.

Loop-d-Loop Innards

It tasted as expected – a moist cupcake with lots of chocolate flavor and a nice cream filling.
